Embodiment has become an important concept in many areas of cognitive science. There are, however, very different notions of exactly what embodiment is and what kind of body is required for what type of embodied cognition. Hence, while many nowadays would agree that humans are embodied cognizers, there is much less agreement on what kind of artifact could be considered embodied. This paper identifies and contrasts six different notions of embodiment which can roughly be characterized as (1) structural coupling between agent and environment, (2) historical embodiment as the result of a history of struct ural coupling, (3) physical embodiment, (4) organismoid embodiment, i.e. organismlike bodily form (e.g., humanoid robots), (5) organismic embodiment of autopoietic, living systems, and (6) social

Review of Richard Healey, Gauging What’s Real: The Conceptual Foundations of Gauge Theories

I loved this book. It’s not an easy read, but it’s deeply rewarding – an important monograph and a useful reference, all in one. Its 2008 Lakatos Prize was well-earned. Gauging What’s Real is also a book that metaphysicians should take notice of, because it overlaps with – and often challenges – much of the literature on natural properties and Humean supervenience. Widening the body to rubber hands and tools: what’s the difference?

The brain represents the body in different ways (e.g., perceptual, motor) for different purposes (recognising oneself, acting in space). Recent evidence of embodiment of external objects has added complexity to an already quite intr...

What’s Your Definiton of Synaesthesia: A Matter of Language or Thought?

Synaesthesia takes place when ordinary stimuli elicit extraordinary conscious experiences. As a rhetorical figure, synaesthesia consists on giving a thing a quality that in fact it cannot have because the thing and the quality are perceived by different senses (e.g. “white noises”). But the physiological and the conceptual or linguistic realities are in fact part of a whole that can be approach...

Analysis and Study of the Embodiment of Actions from Ibn Arabi's Point of View According to Some Principles of Anthropology and Epistemology

Embodiment of deeds and beliefs in the afterlife is the subject of Islamic verses and narratives, and has long been one of the issues of interest to Muslim scholars. The proof and explanation of this idea by Mulla Sadra caused the religious scholars attention again to that, while the roots of this issue were raised in the works of mystics such as Ibn Arabi and his followers. Mohi al-Din has bee...
